What program is right for a person depends on the background, education, and career goals of the student.
-Degree programs last between two to four years and are given by community colleges and universities. They prepare students for a paralegal career offering education in general and specific legal knowledge, oral and written communication, computer knowledge, online research, legal software, analytical thinking, and organization skills among many others that prepares students in all the necessary areas for a successful legal career.
-Certificate programs last between four to eighteen months. This programs offer a very fast training in general legal knowledge that a person with experience and with a bachelor’s degree is able to use in order to work as a paralegal or other legal related occupations. The primary focus of these programs: Real state law, litigation, probate administration, and bankruptcy law. These programs are designed for students with bachelor’s degree or with students who want to add legal knowledge to their education.
Students who are employed in the legal field and need to acquire extra legal knowledge use certificate programs to achieve that.
Students who want to work as a paralegal studying certificate programs, may find it overwhelming if they don’t have a previous education and it is not recommended if a person wants to find important jobs in the paralegal career.
